Nocturne: Bubble Sort By The Lake

For Piano, Percussion, and MIDI Keyboard

Program Note

Maybe it’s just me, but I find something deeply nostalgic about the sound of a square wave. Whenever I hear someone refer to this type of sound as “harsh” or “distorted,” it always makes me feel slightly strange about the fact that I find it poignant, lush, and beautiful. I didn’t live through the dawn of synthesis, nor the golden age of video game soundtracks in the ‘80s and ‘90s. But I can imagine I did. I can imagine that I’m a computer sitting by a lake, wistfully remembering the music of my childhood. The wind rustles my keyboard, rattling plaintively in the gathering dusk. A mouse squeaks. For a moment, technology and nature are at peace.
