Hocket Machine

For Viola and Electronics

Program Note

I began writing Hocket Machine relatively early into the COVID-19 pandemic. The piece was an exploration in collaborative music making, but with oneself. The piece uses delay to create the illusion of more than a single performer.

The first movement, Abound, uses delay in an improvisatory, chaotic texture. The second movement, Stead, is a strict canon primarily in compound triple meter.

Hocket Machine was composed in July 2020 at the Walden School Online Young Musicians Experience (OYME). The piece was written for violist Tawnya Popoff and premiered as part of the Walden School’s composers forum series.
